The Unbearable Weight of Massive Smugness
This DNC is becoming increasingly difficult to follow. The theme seems to be that Harris is the candidate of “joy” while Trump is the candidate of “doom.” So, they are talking about mood not substance. So, what are they? – A mood-altering drug of some sort? Or are they simply reacting to the disposal of grumpy old Joe? But then they have to find something to talk about that makes themselves look good. They threw up a trial balloon last Friday with that horrific economic “plan;” it sunk faster than the Titanic, so they have no substance. What else are they going to do? It looks to me like they are taking the smugness page from Obama’s playbook.
Of course, it began night before last with Obama’s encore to his infamous “cling to guns or religion“. saying “They’ll tell you…that sacrifice and generosity are for suckers,” deeply insulting conservative Christians everywhere. Obama long ago raised smugness to an art form but he seems to keep polishing that apple in his retirement. The man is the king of condescending smugness.
Then there was Nancy Pelosi last night. You remember her? The lady that told how wonderful life in quarantine was with her smugalicious display of freezers that cost more than some cars full of ice cream cartons that cost more than some people spend on dinner. If Obama is the king of condescending smugness, then Nancy Pelosi is the queen. Her appearance last night was a “victory lap” for her role in crushing a man already crushed by the ravages of age. I think that may be peak smug – the overbearing praise of Joe Biden without acknowledgement of how very sad what has happened to him actually is. No one disputes they he needed to step aside, but he was stabbed in the back and now they dance on his grave. The lack of sympathy or empathy that is so evident in this convention is smug multiplied by smug.
Being from California, now thankfully gone, I have a great deal of experience with Nancy Pelosi’s particular brand of smug. It is a smugness that is simply dismissive of anyone that disagrees. Debate is for suckers, arguments for lesser beings – they simply sweep you away with a “Talk to the hand.” Smug has no need for substance.
Which brings me to Tim Walz last night. I did not stay up late enough to hear it, so I read the transcript just linked. My first thought was to wonder if the man accomplished anything in his life without government assistance as he listed “accomplishment” after “accomplishment,” mentioning gratitude for some program or the other after each item. That he is proud of that is smug all its own in the dismissiveness it exhibits towards those of genuine accomplishment – those that did it on their own.
But then there are all the lies he told – falsehoods built on misrepresentations, anchored in exaggeration. So smug is this bunch that they expect us to buy into this pile of lies simply because of the force of their personality.
The very lateness of each night of this convention is smug of itself. The working class has to go to bed early as such jobs begin early in the morning. As late as this thing is going every night, they are clearly dismissive of such concerns. They are just punting the working-class vote.
Which brings me to Kamala Harris tonight. Look for her to condescend massively. She will pretend to sympathy and then offer solutions like Zeus reaching down from Olympus. This is evident in her plan to give money to first-time home buyers. “Here you poor benighted soul, accept my largess to lighten your pitiful life.” Her solution is not to enable, but to create dependency because she views the rest of us simply not as capable as she. She will glory in her nomination as if she earned it in some fashion. She will see Walz’ assistance smugness and raise it astronomically as she accepts a nomination born entirely as a handout.
This convention has become unwatchable because of its condescension. American’s do not want to be condescended to – they want you out of the way so they can get busy earning their success.
