Harris’ Unearned Candidacy

There is a whole lot of “baton” passing going on – herehere – so I googled it and there are a lot of places – some variation of the headline that primarily Biden, but occasionally Hillary, “passed the baton” to Kamala Harris.  What else could they say, it’s not like she won the seat in the course of primaries.  Someone might as well have said “The king is dead, long live the queen.”  Like the monarchies of old she has ascended to this position, she has not earned it.  It occurs to me that her candidacy represents the ultimate expression of Democrat efforts to destroy meritocracy.

Have you ever thought about why monarchy has slowly given way to some form of democracy?  If you review history, there are plenty of places and times where monarchy worked and worked well.  But it could not be relied upon to do so because when the top position was a matter of heredity, as opposed to merit.  The top position was often inadequately filled.  One way to look at democracy is that it provides for a demonstration of merit for those seeking office.  That’s what campaigns are supposed to be about.  Media has distorted that to some extent, creating, or at least vastly widening, a divide between the skills needed to earn the office and the skills needed to perform in the office.  But the divide is not complete, you still have to build and manage a very large campaign organization.

But not only has Harris simply been handed the nomination, she has not even had to build a campaign organization – Biden gifted her with that as well.  That’s why she was unopposed – no one that might have wanted the job and would almost inevitably be better capable of it – could pull an organization together in the time allotted.

Put bluntly, Kamala Harris has done nothing to earn the position in which she finds herself – nothing whatsoever.  The one time she tried she withdrew before she failed – that’s how bad it was.  She is the ultimate expression of grade inflation.

How many times have we, in recent years, pondered the question of undergoing surgery with a surgeon that graduated by virtue of racial preference, or some other non-meritorious consideration, rather than merit?  Well, here we are staring it in the face with a job even more consequential.  A surgeon can only destroy one life at a time – a president can do so en masse.

This nation was never designed to pass batons.  It was designed to have the baton ripped forcibly from the hands of those currently holding it.  We need to fear baton passing.
