Perfect Squared: Best. College. Football. Regular. Season. Ever.
Notre Dame 12-0
Ohio Stae 12-0
If you grow up Irish Catholic in Ohio there are only two college teams that matter, and only two coaches who passed through on their recruiting tours –Ara and Woody– that everyone wanted to hear at the annual local high school football team banquets.
The teams rarely play each other. Ohio State leads the all-time series 3-2, with two games played in the ’30s, two in the ’90s, and a not-very-memeorable 2006 Fiesta Bowl.
This is a good thing as there is considerable overlap between the fan bases. 75%? 90%? Maybe higher?
What should have been a national championship for the ages won’t happen because of the tattoo police otherwise known as the NCAA, but the silver lining is that both could be perfect, if only for a season.
Go Irish, and may you dispatch whichever pretender is sent to Miami ont he 7th.
Coaches Meyer and Kelly define the sport, and their clubs deserve the smiles they are wearing, as do their students, faculty staff and alumni. Double congratulations, all the way around.
Now for the two-peat squared.
