Hating Trump Is One Thing – Hating Nuns Is Another Thing Altogether

Remember when the FBI decided label Catholics as “domestic extremists?”  Everybody thought it was that one office.  It wasn’t, it was systemic and it was really, really ugly.  Turns out the Biden administration wanted to prosecute nuns – NUNS! – for, well, being nuns and believing what the Roman Catholic Church believes.  This was in the DOJ, not the FBI – it was systemic.  As typical, the story is all over the conservative press and not a peep to be found or heard amongst legacy media.

There is, naturally, lots of commentary.  This post is a bit vehement, but I found this bit quite insightful:

Gender ideology is a cult, and abortion is a religious sacrament for liberals. And since conservative Catholics believe in traditional marriage, that sex is real, and that killing babies is wrong, they were targeted for persecution because they are heretics in the new lefty religion that dominates the Democratic Party.

The observation that leftism has taken on an aura of religiosity is not new.  But what is new is that it is taking on some very specific elements of specific religions.  Simply put, prosecuting “non-believers” is a practice of the Taliban in Afghanistan or the mullahs in Iran.  The lefty religion most closely resembles the ugly and awful expressions of Islam.  In a very real way they want to turn back the clock centuries.  (Disclaimer – Christianity does have prosecution of non-believers in its history – history.  We got over it long, long ago.)

Two quick observations.  One, since the fall of communism, (China is now simply totalitarian with hints of communism thrown in) Islam has been the primary bad actor on the world stage.  Why would anybody want to be like them?  In any fashion?  This nation was founded in no small part to escape religious persecution – so now we are going to start up on it again?

What we are seeing here is that hatred is a virulent thing.  It cannot be contained or limited.  You cannot hate Trump and not end up hating a lot of other stuff as well.  Consider this account of leaving the WHCD:

When journalists walked out of the ballroom, they were met by normal, run-of-the-mill protesters who carried signs reading: DEATH TO ALL OF THEM (a Wendy Williams reference). And DEATH TO TYRANT (the singular makes it more aggressive, I think). Everything is good. There is no relation between the protester holding a sign that says DEATH TO ALL OF THEM and the gunman inside trying to bring. . . death to all of them. He’s just mentally ill, I’m sure. There is no popular movement encouraging people to slaughter their political enemies en masse.

When you entertain death wishes in one place it tends to become a universal solution – you tend to miss non-sequiturs like just described.

Second observation.  To require force, whether it is the force of government or simple physical force, to promote an idea indicates that the idea is at a minimum unpopular.  If the force necessary for said promotion increases, the legitimacy of the idea becomes questionable.  When the force becomes sufficiently large the idea itself is revealed as evil.  The force becomes the focus instead of the idea – the prosecution matters more than the crime.

Trump can be very distasteful.  I get why people don’t like him.  But that distaste has morphed into hatred, and has we have seen here, hatred will not be contained – it has transmogrified into a hatred of nuns.  I have a hard time imagining anyone harder to hate than nuns.  Hatred is a malevolent force intent on destroying our civilization from within.  The only antidote is love, which is what nuns offer in abundance.

“Houston, we have a problem.”
