Are There Really Issues This Campaign?

From Wednesday’s Axios piece about how Harris intends to “redefine” herself:

A big and fair question is: What does Harris really believe?

  • Her bet: whatever she says in the small, three-month window of her snap campaign will be what sticks. Harris knows most people know little about her. So she believes she can define herself, even if it includes flip-flops and co-opts

Meaning she thinks the American people are suckers.  She believes reality does not really matter, all that matters is what

Think about it.  She thinks this is social media where you can adopt a new screen name and be a whole new you – and that we will fall for it.  She seems to believe that reality doesn’t really matter – that all that really matters is the show she puts on.

Now, to be fair, showmanship has always been a part of a political campaign, but showmanship is basically about attracting attention and making the mundane look a bit more exciting than it actually is.  Harris is doing something entirely different – she is fabricating, virtually from whole cloth an image for this election – a false front behind which she will do whatever she wants.  It is like the difference between pro-wrestling or a reality show and complete fiction.

I have beaten on the fact that hers is a campaign of lies for weeks now and there are reasons

  1. It makes this all about image with substance taking the third row of seats in the SUV.
  2. It is just insulting assuming we don’t care enough to pay attention.

Campaigns have been slowly growing less substantial for a while now.  Obama beating Romney in 2012 demonstrated that quite well.  But this move represents a quantum leap.  Democrats have been fighting on style, not substance, grounds for a while – whether it be Obama’s race or objections to Trump’s style, they have been putting style front-and-0center, but until now they clearly did so in service to an agenda.  But Harris, as far as we know, has no agenda beyond being elected.  Her agenda is set not by conviction of any sort, but by what she thinks will get her elected.

Pro wrestling’s roots are in the travelling carnivals of old that were basically floating con games.  For decades fans were known to the performers as “marks.”  Since WWF, come WWE, took it national the facade has dropped and the fans are now part of the fun.  Promoters have learned that there is a lot more money to be made in the story than there ever was in the con.  But Harris has gone back to the old days and seems to want to make us think things are real, when there is nothing there are all.

Pro wrestling had to drop the curtain for one simple reason, everyone knew it was storytelling, not genuine fighting and to continue the facade was just insulting the public.  People don’t like to be insulted.  Yet here is Kamala Harris insulting us on a daily basis as she tries to invent herself and she expects us to buy into whatever she decides.  We love a story, but we hate being conned.

Harri’s entire campaign is a con.  A very high stakes con.
